For years, Lazaro worked tirelessly under the California sun—harvesting grapes and supporting his family through seasonal farm labor. Born and raised in Ciudad Guzmán, Mexico, Lazaro came to the United States at just 22 years old in search of the American Dream. He found steady work in Galt, California, eventually becoming a full-time employee at Jim Welch Hay Services, a company rooted in agricultural labor. But like many seasonal workers, Lazaro faced an uncertain future every fall when the grape harvest came to a close.
That’s when he decided it was time for a change.
Recognizing Lazaro’s dedication and strong work ethic, his employer presented him with a life-changing opportunity: if he could earn his Class A Commercial Driver’s License, he could return to the company as a truck driver, hauling hay and earning a stable, year-round income.
Determined to make the most of this chance, Lazaro visited the Galt AJCC, where he connected with a case manager who introduced him to several workforce support programs—including DW-AG, WIOA-167, and Temporary Housing Assistance. With guidance through the application process, Lazaro enrolled in the 160 Driving Academy, where he began his journey toward a professional trucking career.
