The Real Cost of Waiting Another Year to Get Your CDL
Many people think about earning their CDL for months—or even years—before taking the first step.

Hey Truckers! You know better than anyone how much skill and professionalism it takes to operate a commercial vehicle safely. Our roads are only as safe as the drivers on them. That’s why we need to talk about a big concern gaining traction in the industry: how well new drivers are being trained, and the hidden risks that come when nobody’s really checking up on it.
You see, there are important rules called ELDT regulations (that’s Entry-Level Driver Training). These were put in place to make sure every new driver gets solid, standardized training before they ever hit the highway. The idea was to boost safety and make sure everyone earning a CDL is truly prepared. But here’s the problem: There’s a serious lack of oversight, and that loophole affects all of us — from seasoned pros like you to new recruits and, frankly, everyone else on the road.
Industry leaders are speaking up, and you might have seen this topic discussed in places like Transport Topics. Our very own Steve Gold has been vocal about it. The issue is that while schools “self-certify” that they meet ELDT training requirements, there isn’t enough real enforcement or auditing happening.
As Steve Gold put it, “There is absolutely zero enforcement, zero oversight, for anybody who wants to open a commercial driving school. It is putting the American public at risk every day.”
What does this mean for you? It means some training programs might be cutting corners. They might not be giving new drivers enough behind-the-wheel hours or covering all the critical skills required by CDL rules and regulations. When that happens, folks can get a CDL without truly mastering what it takes to operate a big rig safely. That’s a huge problem.
This isn’t just a regulatory detail. It directly affects your daily life on the road and the perception of our entire profession:
The good news is that people are paying attention to this issue. Industry leaders are pushing for changes to strengthen how ELDT regulations are enforced. Here’s what’s needed:
At Truckers Network, we’re here to empower you, the driver. That means keeping you informed about issues that affect your safety, your livelihood, and the integrity of our profession.
